Why?

And why not?

We were married on the 18th July 1981 and wanted to do "something different" to celebrate our 25th anniversary. The idea came when we read a short article in the CTC magazine - however, unlike the two people in the CTC article, we don't expect to nearly miss our train to Penzance because our shorts are in washing machine... we are going to be well orgainsed, military style planning... (yeh, right. Um, Dave actually only seems to own 1 pair of shorts).

There are huge areas of the UK, and Scotland in particular, that we have never seen, so we are really looking forward to seeing some more of our beautiful countryside.

Fund raising

As well as enjoying ourselves, we'd like to try and raise money for a charity.

Training schedule

We both cycle quite a bit each day anyway, so are reasonably fit. We hope to have a few weekend cycle trips in May and June to try and get used to the larger amounts of luggage. Most of our cycle trips so far haven't involved going up steep hills like the ones we will encounter in Cornwall and Scotland.

Accommodation

Camping? At our age? You must be joking... we'll be staying in B&Bs. So far, we have unfortunately failed to find many with massage facilities. We will book every night in advance, so we have to stick to our schedule.

Useless facts about the journey

We are not alone! About 4000 people do this every year, and roughly 3000 of these cycle. The rest do it by car, or in shopping trolleys, walking naked...

The first person to travel from the route was Eliuh Burritt, an American who walked the route in 'several weeks'. Robert Carlisle was the first Brit to do the route - pushing a wheelbarrow. The route was first cycled in about 1880. It's also been done in a Sinclair C5 in about 80 hours, and on roller skates in 9.5 days. The record for the fastest time on a push bike is by Andy Wilkinson who completed the journey in 41 hours 4 min 22 seconds. The most famous recent trip was by Stephen_Gough who walked it naked.
